Dyspraxia DCD Ireland is delighted to announce that we have been awarded funding through the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal to deliver an exciting new project called Nature Builders.
This innovative programme is being developed for young people aged 8-14 years who are currently on the POTTS Occupational Therapy waitlist within the Galway area. The project will combine outdoor exploration with digital creativity, offering participants a unique opportunity to connect with nature, build friendships, and develop confidence in a supportive environment.
Nature Builders will consist of six in-person group sessions. Three sessions will take place outdoors, where participants will engage in nature-based activities and explore their local environment. The remaining three sessions will be held in a computer lab, where young people will recreate and build the worlds they have explored using Minecraft.
The programme will be co-facilitated by an Occupational Therapist, a Nature-Based Facilitator, and a Gaming Facilitator. Through the project, participants will be supported to develop confidence in their movement abilities, engage in collaborative problem-solving, build social connections with other neurodiverse peers, and experience the positive impact that outdoor physical activity can have on wellbeing.
Minecraft will provide a natural bridge between sessions, allowing young people to connect through shared interests, showcase their strengths and creativity, and further deepen their curiosity about the natural world.
As we begin designing the programme, we are keen to hear from parents and carers. We will be holding two online parent focus groups next week, with both morning and evening sessions available to accommodate different schedules. Your feedback will play an important role in ensuring the project is as accessible, engaging, and beneficial as possible for the young people who take part.
