Education Advocacy Update & 2026 State Exams

We continue to actively advocate for fair and equitable access to education for students who require supports.

Our CEO Sharon Lane, will attend the Department of Education’s RACE (Reasonable Accommodations at Certificate Examinations) review meeting (Feb 2026), an important step in ongoing efforts to improve access to state examinations.

In recent months, we have engaged with:

  • The Department of Education
  • The State Examinations Commission (SEC)
  • The National Council for Special Education (NCSE)
  • The Children’s Rights Alliance Education Advisory Group

Our advocacy priorities include:

  • Access to reasonable accommodations (including additional time)
  • The structure and administration of RACE by the SEC
  • The periodic review of the NCSE
  • The adequacy of the Assistive Technology Grant Scheme

Additional Time in the 2026 State Exams

The State Examinations Commission (SEC) has announced new interim arrangements for the 2026 Junior Cycle, Leaving Certificate and LCA examinations.

What’s Changing?

From 2026, many students who already receive certain RACE supports will automatically receive 10 extra minutes per written exam paper (including Paper 1 and Paper 2 where applicable). The aim is to support students in demonstrating their true ability while maintaining fairness across the examination system.

Who Will Automatically Receive the Extra Time?

Students who already have approved RACE supports such as:

  • Use of a word processor / laptop / tablet
  • Reading supports (shared reader, individual reader, reading pen)
  • Recording device
  • Spelling, grammar & punctuation waiver
  • ISL interpreter
  • Alternative format papers
  • Assistive technology
  • Subject exemption (LCA)

If a student currently receives one or more of these supports, they will automatically receive the additional 10 minutes per written paper in 2026. Schools do not need to reapply. The SEC will issue updated decision letters confirming eligibility.

Who Is Not Included?

The additional per-paper time does not apply to:

  • Students who only receive rest breaks or a special exam centre
  • Students who only use a colour identifier
  • Students with supports only for non-written exams
  • Students who already receive 10 minutes per hour (e.g., using a scribe)
  • Students who already receive 15 minutes per hour (blind/vision impaired)
  • Students receiving extra time for aurals (extra time applies only to the written paper)

Students in the “rest break only” category may be considered under the SEC’s complex case process if schools believe further support is required.

Students with Dyspraxia/DCD

Students with Dyspraxia/DCD will receive the additional 10 minutes if they already have qualifying RACE supports approved.

Many students with DCD use:

  • A word processor
  • A spelling and grammar waiver
  • Reading supports

Because these supports qualify under the new arrangements, many students with DCD will automatically benefit. However, a diagnosis of DCD alone does not automatically grant extra time. Eligibility is based on the supports approved through RACE, not on diagnosis.

Do Parents or Schools Need to Take Action?

No action is required.

The SEC will:

  • Identify eligible students
  • Issue updated decision letters
  • Provide schools with a full list of students receiving extra time

Schools will organise appropriate examination arrangements.
