Danielle Ribeiro from Great.com interviewed Dyspraxia DCD Ireland as part of their 'Great.com Talks With...' podcast.
This series is an antidote to negative news stories that aims to shed light on organisations and experts whose work is making a positive impact on the world.
Dyspraxia, a neurological condition affecting motor coordination, is a reality for many in Ireland, yet it remains largely under-recognised. Dyspraxia DCD Ireland, the national charity dedicated to supporting individuals with dyspraxia and their families, is on a mission to raise awareness and provide the necessary resources to help people navigate their everyday lives.
Sharon Lane, the CEO of Dyspraxia DCD Ireland, talked with Great.com about our ongoing efforts to advocate for better recognition and understanding of dyspraxia in society. One of the organisation's core goals is to ensure that individuals with dyspraxia have access to appropriate support services, whether in educational settings, workplaces, or healthcare environments.
Founded in 1995, Dyspraxia DCD Ireland was established in response to the growing need for information and support for individuals with dyspraxia. Since then, the organisation has become a vital resource, offering a range of services including advocacy, education, and community-building initiatives. Our work is rooted in the belief that everyone with dyspraxia deserves the same opportunities to thrive as anyone else, regardless of the challenges they may face.
Through our advocacy work, Dyspraxia DCD Ireland is pushing for policy changes that would improve the lives of those with the condition, making it easier for them to achieve their full potential. The organisation also places a strong emphasis on education and training, offering workshops and seminars to help teachers, employers, and healthcare professionals better understand dyspraxia and how to support those who have it. This proactive approach not only helps to create more inclusive environments but also empowers individuals with dyspraxia to advocate for themselves.
In addition to our advocacy and educational efforts, Dyspraxia DCD Ireland offers a variety of support groups and events designed to build a sense of community among people with dyspraxia and their families. These gatherings provide a safe space where individuals can share their experiences, offer mutual support, and celebrate their successes together.
Dyspraxia DCD Ireland’s commitment to raising awareness and providing support is making a tangible difference in the lives of many across the country. By fostering a greater understanding of dyspraxia, they are helping to break down the barriers that often hold individuals back and are paving the way for a more inclusive and supportive society.
Great.com is an organisation aimed at solving the world’s most dire problem — global climate change. Starting in New Jersey, their mission is to take money from an otherwise harmful and greedy industry (online casinos) and move it towards a positive and good cause (solving the climate crisis). In addition to directly donating 100% of the revenue they earn in the casino industry, they also launch and manage fundraising campaigns to persuade casino entrepreneurs to donate. So far, they’ve generated over $2 million to climate research through their own donations and proceeds from their fundraising initiatives.
