Child Assessment Information

Getting an assessment is an important step toward understanding your child’s needs and strengths. We know this process can feel overwhelming, but you’re not alone, we are here to help.

Step 1 Register with Your Local HSE Primary Care Team

Start by registering your child with your local HSE Primary Care Occupational Therapy team for assessment and diagnosis. Find your local team here.

Why register?

Even if you decide to pursue a private assessment, registering with the HSE keeps future support options open. You may be able to access additional services later.

Important

You don’t need a formal Assessment of Need to access HSE services.
Learn more about Assessment of Need to access HSE services.

Step 2 Consider Private Assessment (Optional)

If waiting times are long, you may choose a private assessment. Options include:

  • Occupational Therapist (OT) – most families choose this route.
  • Paediatrician
  • Neurologist
  • Educational Psychologist

Tips for choosing a professional

  • Ask if they have experience diagnosing Dyspraxia/DCD.
  • Check their fees and what follow-up services they offer.
  • Make sure you and your child feel comfortable with them.
  • Find registered OTs on the AOTI website.

Our POTTS Programme

Dyspraxia/DCD Ireland offers the POTTS Occupational Therapy Programme, including an assessment service for children aged 8–13 who are on a HSE waiting list.

If you would like to refer to the POTTS programme please visit Dyspraxia/DCD Ireland - Referral.

What to Expect During Assessment

  • Assessments are child-friendly and supportive.
  • They involve play-based activities and simple tasks to understand motor skills.
  • You’ll be asked about your child’s development and daily routines.
  • The goal is to identify strengths and challenges so supports can be tailored.

Four Stages of a DCD Diagnostic Assessment

  • Stages 1–3 Led by an Occupational Therapist or Paediatrician (developmental history, motor skills testing, functional impact).
  • Stage 4 Confirmation by a GP, Clinical Psychologist, or Neurologist to rule out other neurological conditions.
  • This collaboration ensures a comprehensive and accurate diagnosis.
  • There is no single professional in Ireland who performs all four steps alone.
