Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), also known as Dyspraxia in the UK and Ireland, affects fine motor skills and coordination development. Certain activities can help this development along. Below are some activities that we recommend for children with Dyspraxia.
Some children with DCD participate in sports and activity groups along with their friends and peers while others may find it more difficult and may prefer solo activities such as swimming and horse-riding or may avoid sporting activities altogether. Being active is particularly beneficial for a child with dyspraxia as it helps with muscle development and control and coordination. Whatever your child’s interest there are many activities available in your local community that you may not yet know about. You can find out about local activities through your local Library, Family Resource Centre and Sports Partnership.
You can contact your local Sports Inclusion Disability Officer (SIDO) for further information or, if you feel that a specific activity group is needed locally you can speak to your SIDO about that too.
Sports inclusion disability officers have organised a range of activity groups for children with DCD in the past, horse-riding and learning to ride a bicycle are two examples. Find your sports inclusion disability officer here.
Here at Dyspraxia/DCD Ireland we are committed to building dyspraxia inclusive communities and to raising awareness of the importance of an inclusive environment for children with dyspraxia. We are available to speak to sports organisations and coaches and to provide practical information on how they can support children of all abilities to participate in sports and activities.
We also have a number of videos on our website that might be of interest to you and your child. These videos were prepared especially for young people with dyspraxia by physiotherapy students at the University of Limerick and have all been tested and approved. You can build your own fitness programme and make it as short or as long as you wish. Check out some of our videos on our youtube account.
