An examination of writing pauses in the handwriting of children with Developmental Coordination Disorder
Dr. Mellissa Prunty, PhD, MSc OT | Lecturer in Occupational Therapy|
Highlights
Children with DCD do not pause more frequently than their TD peers but they pause for longer.
Children with DCD paused more frequently over 10 s which may support additional time during written examinations.
The pauses above 10 s occurred within ideas, which may indicate fatigue rather or in addition to planning in children with DCD.
Children with DCD paused more within words (particularly illegible words) suggesting a break down in the writing process. This emphasises the importance of intervention.
